What is Universal Design?

Universal design and aging in place is something many families live with in their lifetime. Mark and Diane discuss this with their pre-sale customers up front to see if universal design or aging in place is something they would like to consider for their new custom home as it is being built. They ask if there are specific needs to be considered or if the customer is planning for future living. Mark and Diane work with their customer to suggest features to incorporate in the custom home to fit within the desired home investment. They have an extensive list of recommendations for their consideration.

A common misconception with universal design is that it is only for “old people.” The goal of universal design is so anyone living in the home, from toddlers to aging parents, can have all their needs addressed to the greatest extent possible regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. Universal design is where both grandchildren and grandparents can live in the same home.

Action Builders has many years of experience in building homes with universal design features. Mark and Diane earned the Certified Aging In Place Specialist (CAPS I, II) designation from the National Association of Home Builders in 2013. To further their knowledge and expertise in this area they attended training in 2020 and received the CAPS III designation.

Whether you are planning ahead for aging parents, a toddler, a handicapped child, grandchildren, or your own future needs, a universal design home is one that accommodates inevitable physical changes. If you are like the majority of Americans over the age of 45, you want to continue living in your home throughout your maturing years. Universal design and Aging In Place means getting to live in your home safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of your age or ability level.

Working with a builder who is certified and experienced in Universal Design and Aging In Place homes is important as there are so many features and options to consider. It is definitely less expensive to incorporate these options while the home is being built instead of having to come back at a later date and do a more expensive remodel as the need arises. As Certified Aging In Place Specialists, Mark and Diane have the solutions to your questions. We have been taught the strategies and techniques for designing and building aesthetically pleasing, barrier-free living environments (your home!). We enjoy working with our pre-sale customers in planning and building a custom home where our customer can gracefully age in place in the comfort of their own home.
